"What are you doing Don Pancho?"

"I'm listening to the earth sing, mi'jita."

So begins the hauntingly lovely conversation between a little girl and her friend, the village elder, Don Pancho about the wonders of nature.  The whimsical notes of the "songs" the earth sings will tickle the imagination, and delight children as well as adults.  The implicit lesson about paying attention to our connection with nature, getting so quiet you can hear a "star's lullaby to the trees" is gently cloaked in lyrical word pictures that invoke the southwestern flavor and landcape that inspired the story.

Childhood is a time of sweetness and happy, exploration, but it also contains moments of frustration, hurt, or confusion. Where Is My Twinkle is a story about what happens when a little girl has one of those bad days and loses her happy Twinkle. She searches all over and asks all her friends where to find her Twinkle but she can't find it in any of the places they tell her to look. Finally, her mother tells her the secret of where her Twinkle has been hiding.

Twinkle is dedicated to all my animal friends, who constantly help me find my Twinkle on those days it seems far, far away.

The Isle of Makai is a whimsical tale of a grumpy, but kind King who banishes colors from his island kingdom, and how young Sophronia and her beautiful pygmy goat Tinker help the King save the Many of our fondest memories of moments in nature have to do with her extraordinary palette of colors.

From butterflies to flowers to storms to sunsets, the colors that occur in nature are a dazzling rainbow of choices. Nowhere have I seen colors that took my breath away more than the thousand and one shades of blue that you see flying over the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. That is the first place that I truly knew the meaning of azure blue. Isle of Makai is a child of that first flight and the wonder of the islands.

Moonbows tells of the Dragon Earth Mother's sadness when she finds out that children are afraid of the night, never go outside, and have never seen a shimmering night sky. It is a story poem born of a thousand childhood nights of being taken outside to see the stars whether up in the mountains or just in our backyard. It was inspired by an extraordinary phenomenon that occurs in the South Pacific, a night rainbow, a white rainbow that stretches from the sky to the sea. All around the world, myths and legends speak of the balance of nature, light and dark. Night, in all its glory, is becoming a forgotten miracle in our fast paced electronic world. In lives lived by the miracle of electric light, Moonbows reminds us to take a moment to step outside, and enjoy the velvet beauty of nighttime with its sparkling starlit skies and gentle covering of darkness that allows the frenetic pace of humans to slow down, and nature with all its creatures the chance to take a deep breath.

Cow Day Afternoon is a fanciful word painting and photographic journey through a real afternoon spent in company with the Mother Band of cows and their babies on the beautiful, and historic Empire Cienega Ranch in Sonoita, Arizona. The words pay tribute, at a child's level, to the land and the loving connections between the members of the Mother Band and the terrain they call home. For the author, the Empire Cienega is a frequently visited sacred space, her "church", the place she goes to refuel and reconnect. This afternoon she had a happy group of four legged friends sharing her wanderings.
